History of Regions Financial Corporation
There were originally three banks, established in Alabama, that eventually became the core of this corporation. In 1856, Alabama chartered the First National Bank of Huntsville. Then, in 1871, the First National Bank of Montgomery opened for business. By 1928, the Exchange Bank opened shop in Birmingham. The Exchange Bank built a very modern bank building in Birmingham and modernized banking in that city by opening a drive-in teller window and a parking lot. The Exchange Bank and the Security Commercial Bank merged in 1957 and became the Exchange Security Bank that was to be the third bank of the multi-bank company.
These three banks became the first Alabama multi-bank in 1971, which was named the First Alabama Bancshares, Incorporated. Starting out with $543 million, by the end of 1974 the assets of the corporation were at $1.2 billion.
The years of 1981 and 1986 were important to the forming of what eventually became the Regions Financial Corporation as during this time Alabama allowed the formation of statewide banks and saw the passage of the interstate banking bill that allowed banks to cross state lines. The name change came in 1994 after several merges were accomplished and the bank holding company became a multi-state corporation.
