History of Citigroup

Although it did not become Citigroup until late in 1998 when Citicorp merged with Travelers Group, the history begins in 1812. That was the year that City Bank of New York was chartered in New York State. Changing its name to the National City Bank of New York, it later became the largest American bank. During the following decades it became first in several areas:

  • compound interest
  • unsecured personal loans
  • checking accounts
  • certificates of deposit
  • first overseas branch - Buenos Aires - for a U.S. bank

By 1918, the assets reached $1 billion. The corporation officially became Citicorp in 1976 and later it created 24-hour ATMs. John S. Reed, as CEO, was instrumental in making it the largest U.S. bank as it went global in over 90 countries.

Reorganizing in 2009, the corporation split its operations into two separate groups. It remained one company with two major operations. Citicorp would handle most banking functions and Citi Holdings would handle the brokerage and asset end. The corporation presently serves 200 million clients in 100 countries worldwide.
