BB&T Corporation holds the seventeenth place in the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council's Top 50 Bank Holding Companies list. Headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC, the bank was founded in 1872 as Branch and Hadley, named for the two founders, Alpheus Branch and Thomas Jefferson Hadley. After several changes in ownership and name changes, the bank ultimately became Branch Banking and Company in the early 1900s.

After the struggles and growth of a century, the company merged with Southern National Corporation. Throughout the 1990s and up to 2010, they added dozens of other banks to the acquisition list. Despite the many changes and acquisitions over the latest 20-year span, BB&T headquarters remains in Winston-Salem.
